In the UK, there is a national policy for dog travel on trains, here I look at how this works.
The National Rail Conditions of Carriage, specify that wach passenger may travel with up to 2 dogs, free of charge. They must either be on a lead or in a carrier with the maximum dimensions of 60cm x 60cm x 85cm.
Guidelines do vary between operators, so I have provided a round up below:
- Abellio ScotRail
- Arriva Rail London
- c2c
- Caledonian Sleeper
- Chiltern Railways
- CrossCountry
- East Midlands Trains
- Eurostar
- Govia Thameslink Railway
- Grand Central
- Greater Anglia
- Great Western Railway
- Heathrow Express
- Hull Trains
- London North Eastern Railway
- Merseyrail
- Northern
- Southeastern
- South Western Railway
- TfL Rail
- TransPennine Express
- Transport for Wales
- Virgin Trains
- West Midlands Trains
It is worth noting, that travel for dogs on buses does not have a national policy, check out traveling with dogs on buses for more information.
